I originally started out doing sculptural raku pieces, incorporating humor and surrealism, even abstractism as an influence to my work, each piece is hand thrown then hand built. I choose to use Raku glazes with my sculptures since the whole of the process is unpredictable and I felt those pieces needed that random element. One can use the same glaze on the same shape piece and never get an identical pattern or result. I like that the fire and smoke have the last say on what my creations will ultimately look like.
I then went on to work on functional pottery, bowls, spoon holders, bells and vases.
This is when I started having an interest in crystalline glazes. You can get some beautiful results. Although they aren't as "random" as raku, I still find that each piece creates it's own character, plus I love the colors and random patterns the glazes take on. I've worked mostly in vases because this glazes are toxic, but have also explored some ways to use the crystalline glazes safely in bowls as well.
Which brings me to my most recent undertaking... Underglazing! I've decided to give my bowls character by actually giving them a character of their own. I've followed my interests in some of my favorite subjects, pirates, squid, deep sea creatures, monkey's with a fez on and other characters that tickle my fancy. I have a great time doing them and hope that others enjoy them as much as I do making them."
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been creating art since I could hold a pencil. I was lucky enough to have parents who recognized my interests and enrolled me in art classes at a young age. Since then I've been creating, painting, drawing, etc. I discovered ceramics later in life and have developed a profound working relationship with clay and see it as a medium to transform my ideas into reality. |
